CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery - A Giant Leap in Cancer Treatment

The name "CyberKnife" is actually a bit wrong name, no knife in sight! However, this does not allow the tumor ablative therapy (ie, "knife") to be performed painlessly and efficiently, without the need for surgery with the robot (hence "cyber") linear accelerator (radiotherapy machine)

Conventional radiotherapy uses large size of the field and only a few beams of radiation to treat "regions" in the body, which means the dose to the tumor is often limited by the radiation tolerance of surrounding normal tissue. Last chemotherapy and "magic bullet" drugs have been a small step forward, but have side effects and are generally not lived up to the hype.

Tumors are chaotic, and tends to wrap around or in proximity to other vital tissues. This means that a surgeon in skills stretched to the limit, or the use of conventional radiotherapy would damage healthy tissue too. Cancer radiation oncologists need a clear picture of the exact location of the tumor (with all the irregularities), so you can accurately determine the radiation delivery to these parts and these parts alone. This is where the CyberKnife ® comes in.

What can the CyberKnife ® treatment?

The procedure is so precise that it is now possible to treat tumors previously thought to be incurable. Although the results of treatment are not always show up immediately, in most cases the procedure will first stop the growth of tumors, before gradually decreasing their size.

In the absence of open surgery, the complications usually associated with surgery to remove as needed for a long recovery time. Because this treatment is appropriate for those who are not good enough to cope with side effects of surgery and most patients leave the clinic the same day as their treatment.

Major procedures such as lung and liver resection, removal of the pancreas and is now an alternative option prostatectomy with this technique.

Future

The potential for this type of instrumentation is amazing, and in the next few years will see some interesting developments in cancer treatment. Attempts are now underway, including a study of CyberKnife ® in comparison with conventional surgery for stage 1 or 2 lung cancer. CyberKnife ® is being tested in functional brain disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson's disease ", and there are plans to extend the therapy to eliminate electrical disturbances in the heart (as an alternative to catheter ablation). CyberKnife ® is also being tested in early breast cancer.
